The Art of Alchemy: To Illustrate

The Art of Alchemy: To Illustrate

Tell us a little bit about yourself, where are you from what do you do?

I’m a freelance illustrator living in London with my boyfriend. Currently juggling renovating a property and Illustrating!

When did you develop a love for illustration?

It probably started from when I was little, I was so precious with my pens I made my mum keep them up on the cabinets so my little sister couldn’t take them, affectionately known as ‘Pens up high’. Then more so at school where I went to an Arts college – I love things that just look visually pleasing, be that interiors/people/gardens and you can really capture the beauty in things through illustration.

Do you have any advice for those who are in a creative industry?

Make a portfolio and try and get it in front of as many people as you can. Also, know your own style but always try and develop on that with different mediums so you can be versatile

What inspires you and your work?

My friends – I seem to always surround myself with people who are real personalities in all senses of the word, not just artistic but funny, wild and full of ideas!

I have always worked within Marketing and illustrations can bring even the most mundane projects  to life.

What one thing could you not live without?

My Family

As we have been building and developing on our webpage, we got chatting to to wonderful Carmen, founder of www.toillustrate.com, who has helped us along the way. Find out what gets her creative juices flowing and her favourite way to style her hair.

What is a typical morning like for you?

Most mornings before I start work I like to go for a swim, we have an outdoor pool near to my house and it just clears my head and wakes me up for the day.  I then like to go get a coffee & catch up on whats happened happened over night online. This always gives me inspiration and I screenshot as I go along. When I get home sit at my computer and start on emails making a to do list for the day – I always write one the previous evening of what I need to get done the next day then prioritise in the morning. I work with a lot of international brands so often received new commissions and emails halfway through the night that need attention in the morning. I then start on whatever Illustration I need to do first!

What is your favourite way to style your hair?

Beachy waves. Although my hair is huge and wild so it quickly goes from beauty to tornado waves! After using hair oils, however, I’m able to tame the wildness and continue rocking the beachy waves.
