Do’s and Don’ts

When it comes to self-care, there’s a lot that goes into it, especially for men, who have known to struggle with maintaining their personal self-care. Combining physical, mental, and emotional health, this seeming project isn’t something that should be taken lightly and should remain a priority as you work on your overall wellbeing.

With that said, here are the do’s and don’ts for the best men’s self-care practices.

Do: Start with your mental health

Although maintaining positive mental health is an intricate and ongoing process, it’s arguably the most important to one’s wellbeing. Maintaining mental strength and constantly improving your self-image is a vital component of taking care of yourself. Setting aside personal time for yourself each day or even each week is a great way to work on your mental health. Whether its spending time with friends and family or having a little time to yourself every now and then, it’s something you can do to clear your mind and unwind from daily life.

Reflecting on your life, feelings, and events that have happened is also a great way to strengthen your mental health. Do this by starting a journal or finding a creative outlet to let out your thoughts and how they make you feel. Becoming in touch with your innermost feelings is the greatest way to keep your head clear and retain a positive headspace. Plus, talking to yourself in positive language will help you out when you critique yourself and are feeling down. In reality, you are your own worst enemy so, practicing positive self-talk can help boost self-esteem.

Don’t: Think that self-care isn’t “masculine”

When many men think of “self-care” they tend to think of female pampering: salon and spa days, but it truly isn’t the full picture of what self-care is. This is a massive reason many men don’t practice self-care or don’t necessarily believe in its benefits. This is a mindset you cannot fall into because the downfall can be impactful.

We need to talk about Men’s mental health to break the stigma that this is a women’s health issue. Taking care of yourself doesn’t question your “manhood” in any way and if anything, strengthens your manhood by showing you can take care of all your physical, emotional and mental health. As a human, self-care should be practiced by both men and women.

Do: Upkeep your personal appearance

When it comes to changes you can make physically, maintaining your personal appearance can make you feel good about yourself. Taking care of your outward appearance is an easy way to show you care about how you present yourself to others. This means keeping up with grooming habits, maintaining good skin, dressing well and improving body language.

Maintain your grooming habits! Adopting a skin routine will keep you looking young, glowy, and happy. Matching it with a sharp haircut and trimmed beard or moustache will help you level up your personal appearance. There is a misconception that having these types of routines require a lot of time and preparation, but that’s not always true! Simply schedule regular visits with your barber, or develop a frequent cadence to purchase new razors and shave essentials. Harry’s is a great place to start if you’re looking for affordable yet quality products as you incorporate this routine into your everyday life!

Don’t: Fill your time with social media

In today’s world, social media can be a toxic place for anyone scrolling through the likes of Facebook or Instagram. When it comes time for self-care, shutting off these forms of media can put you in a much better place. Saturating yourself with these kinds of activities can lead to negativity and even irrational thoughts due to the constant comparison to other people’s lives.

Social media is a world of its own and it’s easy to get sucked into that and lose a sense of yourself. Whether that be in terms of dealing with others on the platform or consuming the content you see, it can have an effect on your psyche. The best way to avoid this is by figuring out why you use social media and how it affects you.

Do: Expand your horizons (try new things, volunteer, read a book, exercise, challenge yourself)

If you’re ever finding yourself in a drought or trying to find a way to change your life for the better, the best way is trying something new. Improve your overall wellbeing by taking on new challenges and tasks. Stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to new hobbies, new friends, and an overall impact on your life. The first step in expanding your horizons is figuring out your interests. Whether it’s reading, exercising, sports, or whatever, finding joy in the things that interest you can open you to new opportunities that you should take advantage of. You’re not into reading? Considering trying an audiobook service like Audible, to try out something new! The important part that comes with this is the mental space you’ll be in when you’re doing something you enjoy. Be willing and open-minded to try these new things and you might just be surprised at the results.
