Summer Hair Concerns

We’ve passed the summer solstice, the official longest day of the year, and July’s just around the corner! We’re looking forward to some more sunny weather, but are less excited for dry, dull, beachy hair, and humidity-induced frizz. To manage your hair during the summer months, here are a few common hair concerns and some tips to keep your hair long and healthy until September.

  • Proteins in your hair are highly sensitive to UV in sunlight, and can experience sun damage, causing your hair to become weaker and duller with too much sun.

SOLUTION: You’d never sunbathe without sun cream, so why should your hair go without protection? Consider a shampoo with SPF, or a sunhat to shade your hair and scalp. Everyone forgets sometimes, so for those of you who’ve gone without, our ultra-moisturising Amla Oil is a powerhouse of all the best nutrients to get your hair back in shape, and restore shine.

  • High levels of humidity can make even the straightest hair start to frizz in the summer.

SOLUTION: Keep your hair moisturised all summer with an intensive overnight treatment once a week to prevent summer frizz. Our Grapefruit and Peppermint oils use Sweet Almond Oil to smooth hair, and for something a little stronger, try our Amla Oil, which tames frizz with nourishing Argan Oil to nurture hair follicles and seal cuticles against moisture in the air. Consider air-drying your hair in a loose plait for no-fuss beach waves: just add some oil to the midlengths and ends of your hair to smooth flyaways and frizz, without weighing your hair down.

  • Hot weather means the ever-attractive sweaty hair, and an oily scalp.

SOLUTION: First, cut down on hair washing. Instead, rinse after a day at the beach, and brush some of our oil through your hair. It sounds counterintuitive, but oil can be the perfect solution to oily hair, when washing your hair can lead to more build-up. Natural oils like ours provide the scalp with some much-needed moisture, which means your oil-producing glands can relax, and cut down on the sebum. Especially good in this case is our Peppermint Oil, which helps to control sebum-production, and contains menthol, for a cool and refreshing sensation – perfect for a hot day! Keep clean hair off your face with a messy bun, or a loose summer braid.

  • Chlorine and salt water can strip moisture from your hair, leaving it dry.

SOLUTION: Before you go swimming, wet your hair and add conditioner or hair oil. This saturates your hair follicles, and reduces the amount of sea/ pool water each strand will absorb, and protect it from drying chemicals. Our oils are also really important after swimming, to help ensure the chlorine and salt are thoroughly cleaned out of your hair, and to restore any moisture it has lost.

  • After a summer of pool parties, blonde and dyed hair can turn green.

SOLUTION: Light hair is more porous than dark, and as a result, blonde and dyed hair can need a little extra attention, and sometimes turns slightly green after time in the pool. As with other hair types, it’s important to make sure your hair’s in great shape with an intense moisturising treatment, and to rinse and oil hair before swimming, to saturate the follicles, and prevent it from absorbing chemicals from the pool. It can also be useful to change the type of pool you’re using: hair turns green, not because of the chlorine, but because of the copper pipes that transport water to pools. Due to evaporation, the copper build up only really happens in outdoor pools, so if you’re a swimming fanatic, stick to indoor lidos. Massively helpful for any colour concerns is our Amla Oil, which contains both Argan and Avocado Oils to seal in colour, and protect your hair from pollutants.
