Treating Damaged Hair

Ask an Alchemist

How many times are we greeted with beauty promises that a certain product will treat our dry and damaged hair? The list of serums, hair masks and conditioners are endless.

After sitting with a hairdresser last weekend, discussing all things hair, we were talking about how to treat dry hair. The moment your hair leaves it’s root, it is no longer a living tissue. Your hair is essentially dead. Because of this, it cannot heal as it doesn’t contain living cells or protein.

The best thing to do to treat damaged hair is have regular hair cuts to improve and maintain the condition.  But unfortunately, once the hair itself is damaged, it is impossible to reverse. Think of it this way, once you mix the ingredients of a cake together, there is no way you can get the sugar, eggs, flour and butter back to their original form. This is exactly what your hair is like. Cake mixture… Just kidding. But the metaphor stands to be true.

Whilst on the topic of food however, our diet can promote the health of our hair growth. Plant oils such as almond, avocado and coconut oil, which actually feature in our products, can be enjoyed as part of your diet and promote healthy hair. Coconut oil is so diverse and can be enjoyed in a variety of dishes. It is one of our favourite staple oils. However, damaged hair can be strengthen by foods high in hydrolyzed protein. These include foods like gelatine, anything high n amino acids and soy. But to achieve healthy hair, regular haircuts, minimal heat and your diet can help you achieve your goals.
