5 Tips for a Healthier Period

You might already have started considering how you’re going to detox after all the festive indulgences. Cutting out refined sugar from your diet, joining the gym, committing to a little more ‘me time’… but have you given a second thought to that time of the month?

Menstruation is pretty much at the center of health for women so we think it’s deserving of some serious consideration!

Whether you’ve been menstruating for years, have just started your period, or know someone who has, here are 5 top tips every woman should consider during their period as part of a healthier lifestyle:

  1. Wash your hands before and after going to the bathroom to change your tampon or pad. This may sound obvious but when it comes to tampon usage, you really must be diligent about hygiene. Clean hands lower your risk of developing toxic shock syndrome (TSS).
  2. Always use the lowest tampon absorbency required for your flow and never use a tampon unless you have your period. Using a higher absorbency than needed increases your risk for infection and TSS.
  3. Change your tampon every 4-8 hours and do not use a tampon overnight if you’re likely to sleep more than 8 hours; opt for a pad instead. It’s a good idea to alternate between tampons and pads during your period anyway.
  4. Eat more iron-rich food. Iron allows blood to transport oxygen throughout your body. When you bleed, iron is released from the body leaving you at risk of iron deficiency. Since most women are deficient in this mineral the week after menstruating, you may feel tired and find yourself craving carbs! Instead, try reaching for dark leafy greens, lentils, nuts, seeds, legumes, mushrooms and more.
  5. Switch to organic cotton tampons, pads and liners, which have never been linked to TSS. Since current legislation does not require manufacturers to list their ingredients, there’s no way to know for sure that the cotton you’re putting inside of your vagina isn’t full of harsh chemicals, bleach and pesticides. Also, as your vagina is the most absorbent and sensitive part of your body, scented tampons can cause real discomfort and pH imbalance.

TOTM organic cotton tampons, pads and liners are made from non-GM cotton, grown without the need for chemical fertilisers or pesticides, are free from chlorine, rayon, cellulose wood pulp, perfumes and dyes. They’re pH-neutral, hypoallergenic and biodegradable. They are better for your body and the environment. Shop the range here.
